hi I’m Paulette Morrissey from Tulip Square and today I’m going to show you how to make this cute table topper we call it coffee time I believe and it’s just nine squares and four of them feature cute little big old coffee mugs so there is no appliqué or anything to this it’s just plain old quilt piecing no paper piecing so we’re going to head over to the sewing machine and let’s make this cute little thing and there is a link for the pattern at the end of the video

alright to make this cute little table topper it’s got a lot of steps but they’re all very easy steps so to start with we’re going to take these dark color 2-in wide strips and the white little squares that are also 2 in wide or two inches square and we’re going to sew them to the ends of each of these strips like so we’re going to sew them diagonally now you can either draw the diagonal line on each of these or you can follow a line on your sewing machine whichever you prefer be sure you’re putting them both going right directions when you’re sewing the two ends this one goes this way this one goes this way when you’re sewing something like this together it’s easier to start on this line that’s a solid straight line and you start right there rather than starting at this end where it has a tendency to get chewed up by your sewing machine next I’m going to cut off these excess corners leaving about a quarter of an inch seam allowance

Then I’m going to go press them towards the corners

Now we have four little pieces like this all done and I’m going to set those aside I believe these are the saucers and then we’re going to take these pieces where you only have 7 inch white and two of the darker ones of the same length and we’re going to just sew them together in a strip like this there will be a link for the pattern at the end of the video so watch for that it will give you all of the sizes and dimensions and numbers of pieces you need plus obviously the step-by-step instructions and once these three pieces are sewn together like this I’m going to go press them toward the light aqua or whatever color you’re using towards the outside and then I’m going to cut four pieces out of this we’ve got these four little pieces I’m going to set those aside and then we’re going to take these little bitty pieces and we’re going to sew them together in pairs of four of the white and four of the aqua and I’m just going to sew them in pairs okay now you’ve got four of these little pieces and we’re going to take the pieces we just finished over here and we’re going to sew them up in pairs so that it look like this and that will be a little mug handle the handle for your mugs and always press towards the darker color when you ever you can just so you don’t have a seam showing through on a light colored like the white and now you’ve got four of these which are your little mug handles and then you’re going to take these little tiny white strips and you’re going to sew one to the top edge of each of these mugs and then you’re going to take the pieces that are a little bit bigger and you’re going to sew that to the bottom and I just sew these three pieces together like this on all of these and then I’m going to come back and press them now I have these pieces all pressed and now we’re going to set those aside for a minute and we’re going to go back to our pieces that we did first and now you’re going to take orange pieces or whatever color you used for your accent piece color and we’re going to sew one to the bottom edge of each of these and these are the saucers for the cups okay now that we’ve got all the handles done we’re going to sew them to the side of each cup just like so I’m going to go ahead and sew these and they all go on the right hand side because that’s just the way they’re made now I’ve got all the cup pieces sewn together and they’ve all been pressed towards mug because that’s the darker color of the two and there’s a lot less bulk there too okay and then we’re going to sew a white strip same size as the cup piece the opposite side of each cup now we’re going to take these saucer section pieces and we’re going to sew them to the bottom of each cup just like so and don’t sew any like this I’ll be ripping that one out and sewing it again now we’re just going to sew a narrow white strip to the top of each mug piece just to square up the block nicely

Just this piece right to here now I can set our mug blocks aside for a minute and pull out our big bold squares and you’re going to take white triangles you’re going to sew white triangles to the opposite corners of each one like so and your white corners will extend about a quarter inch beyond each end which is what you want them to do make sure you centered it in here so there’s an equal amount of extended white on each end and then you sew your quarter inch seam and then put one on the opposite side here and do the same thing now you’ve got all your pieces that look like this triangle sticking off little edge sticking off so you’re going to take more of the squares I mean now you’re going to take two more of the triangles and sew them last two sides like so make sure you get them evenly spaced from edge to edge with an equal amount of overhang and you’re going to sew these down just like so quarter inch seam on each edge but you can notice that if you keep your seams even and you put your triangles nice and centered when you put the second triangle down right where these two meet that will be where your quarter inch seam starts for the next one that is your quarter inch it’s a nice guide to end up right there at that quarter inch now we have five of these nice little squares all done we’re going to set those aside for a minute and we’re going to go back to the mug pieces and we’re going to put some sashing on the mug pieces next you’re going to take your dark turquoise strips and we’re going to put one on each side of each mug like so and then press them towards the sashing now you’re going to sew one of the diamond squares to each side of two of the mug pieces and have a strip like this but just on two of the mugs you do this and then press them towards the sashing strip okay now you’ve got two long strips like this the diamond on each end and a cup in the middle so set those aside for a second and then take your remaining diamond print diamond take your remaining diamond square and sew two of these to opposite sides of that diamond square and then you’ll have two of these strips left now this square has got the strips pressed towards the dark sashing and then you’re going to take your last two strips and you’re going to take your little bitty accent color squares and you’re going to sew them to both ends of these two strips and then press that towards the sashing now these two strips get sewn to the opposite sides of this last diamond square and make sure you line up your corners nicely

Now you’re going to take your last two cup pieces and you’re going to sew them to opposite sides of this diamond square with the tops of the cups facing towards the square like so

Now you have this strip done with the cups facing towards the center so you’re going to take your first two strips and sew them to opposite sides of this with the cup also facing towards the center and the other one the last one the last way and make sure all right so we’ve got it all put together

Like this so what I’m going to do now is take two of the sashing strips of the dark color and I’m going to sew them to two opposite sides

Going to go on to the sides

and I always cut these just a little bit longer than what the pattern says so I can snip off the extra at the end if I need to and don’t have to worry about running out if I a little too ungenerous with my seams all right I’ve got the border strips sewn on opposite sides of two sides obviously and then I’m going to take these last two strips and I’m going to sew a little white square at the end of each and what we’re going to need is a white square each end but what I like to do is sew one on and then attach these binding strips and make sure I’ve got the opposite end really right where it belongs before I sew the second square on if you’re really accurate with your your binding I mean your borders you don’t have to do this but this is how I like to do it so I’ll show you what I mean okay I’ve got the white squares sewn onto just one end of each of these last two pieces of this border strip and then I’m going to sew them onto the last two sides like so but when I get close to the end I will see how accurate I am before I sew the second white square to the opposite end

getting close to the end here and you can see that I have more than a quarter of an inch all I need for seam allowance to sew this last little white piece on this piece will go here and because I still cut these a little extra long I have a little room to play with so all I need to do now is I will cut this off at a nice accurate quarter inch after this seam so I know that I will have a quarter inch to sew this little piece on and then it will fit perfectly in that little area I’m just going to crease this right here and I’m going to cut a quarter of an inch above it I want to just do that and then I’m going to that out from under my sewing machine and I left a little extra space here so I can sew this in place right along that line I just folded on

it’s a little more fiddly this way but then I get really nice accurate corners for my my borders if you really accurate in cutting and sewing all your other seams it won’t be an issue and you don’t have to do this finger press that I’m going to finish that same and that will last nest perfectly right where it belongs right here

that’s

Now just finish that seam and I do the same thing on the opposite side now we’ve got that done we’ve got nice perfect corners everywhere and your table runner is all finished that wasn’t bad at all was it so now you know how to make this cute table topper it was pretty easy wasn’t it you know a number of pieces and a number of steps but nothing difficult at all and easy enough even for beginners to do because there’s nothing hard about it so I hope you enjoyed this video there is a a link for the pattern right at the end of the video here and if you like this video please hit the Subscribe button and hit the little bell if you want to be notified when we put up new videos which is every Saturday morning and of course hit the Subscribe button I will see you next week with a brand new video bye-bye have a good week
