QUILTED MICROWAVE BOWL COZY HOLDERS – A STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL
Here’s a fun and easy project for you! These bowl cozies are so handy to have, for hot and cold foods. They make great gifts, and are also a popular and simple item to make and sell at markets.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure all batting, fabric and thread is 100% cotton if you ever plan to use these in your microwave oven, or if you are making them to sell. Anything else may potentially catch on fire in the microwave!
1. For each bowl cozy, you will need two 10 inch squares of fabric plus two 10 inch squares of batting.
2. Line up each square of fabric with a square of batting, with the fabric right side up.
3. Draw or mark a light diagonal line on each square, in each direction (making a big X on your square).
4. Stitch along these diagonal lines on both of your squares.
5. Fold each square in half, with the batting on the outside. Measure and mark 2 inches along one end of the fold, and 1 inch up from the fold along the edge. Draw a short diagonal line from these two points.
6. Do this on both edges of both squares, then stitch these short seams. These will be the darts that shape the cozy.
7. Unfold each square and refold it in the opposite direction, and repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Sandwich the two pieces together, right sides facing and pin or clip the edges together.
9. Stitch all the way around the outside edge, leaving about a 3 inch section open for turning to the right side.
10. Turn to right side and press, tucking in the raw edges of the open section.
11. Topstitch all the way around the outer edge, sealing that opening as you go.
Your bowl cozy is finished! Make a whole stack of them, in everyone’s favorite colors!
