EASY MICROWAVE POTATO BAGS – A STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL
These microwave potato bags are so easy to make! We’ll show you how in just a few simple steps. They’re a great item to make and sell at craft fairs and farmers markets. They’re very popular and sell well!
IMPORTANT NOTE: BE SURE ALL FABRIC, BATTING AND THREAD IS 100% COTTON. Other threads like polyester, rayon etc, can spark and start on fire in your microwave.
1. Two sizes are shown here. For the small (two potato bag) size, your pieces need to be cut 10 x 18 inches. For the large size (3-4 potato bag) size, cut all pieces 12 x 21 inches. For each potato bag, you will need two pieces of fabric (outside and lining) and one piece of batting.
2. Neatly stack the three pieces – batting first, then lining, right side up and outer fabric, right side down.
3. Stitch all the way around the outer edge, leaving a 3-4 inch opening along one of the short ends.
4. Trim corners and turn bag to right side and press. Fold open edges to inside and stitch along this end of the bag.
5. From the stitched end, measure and fold at 8 inches for large size, or 6-1/2 inches for small size.
6. Now fold the top edge down, so you have about a 1-1/2 inch overlap on top of the first edge. Clip or pin all layers in place.
7. Stitch along each side, going slowly as the seams have a lot of layers. Double stitch at the flap end.
8. Your bag is finished! You can press it if you like.
When using your potato bag, you will have to determine your cooking time based on the wattage of your microwave oven and the size of your potatoes. For instance, in my 1000 watt oven, I can bake 1 or 2 medium size potatoes in about 5 or 6 minutes. Try baking for about 3-4 minutes, then poke on the potato through the side of the bag and see if it feels soft at all. If it still feels firm, try another 30 seconds or so then test it again.
Be sure to wash your potato bag after each use. Do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets or other laundry additives with these bags, as they will be in direct contact with food and are used in a microwave oven.
